At the River's Root
Deep in Shizuoka lies Kawane—a name that literally means "river root," marking the headwaters of the Oigawa River. This remote mountain village harbors Japan's last primeval forest on the main island, protected by the Ministry of Environment as a natural treasure. The entire region sits within the UNESCO Minami-Alps Biosphere Reserve, recognized as a model for sustainable development where human activity and biodiversity thrive together. At KVTC, our journey to find the best yuzu led us to Kawane—a place where exceptional fruit and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference came together.
